8.2-Magnitude Earthquake Off Alaska Prompts Tsunami Warning - The New York Times

A powerful 8.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coast of Alaska late Wednesday night, prompting a tsunami warning for parts of the state and a tsunami watch as far as Hawaii.

The earthquake was felt throughout the Alaska Peninsula and on Kodiak Island, the Alaska Earthquake Center reported.

The alert issued by the National Tsunami Warning Center was in effect for about two hours across south Alaska, the Alaska Peninsula and the Aleutian Islands.

The center also said Alaska recorded last year’s most powerful and third-most powerful earthquakes worldwide.

Last December, a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of a remote area of southern Alaska, but it did not spark any tsunami warnings that could threaten the region’s sparely populated string of islands.

About six months earlier, a 7.8 quake struck an area offshore, south of the Alaska Peninsula, close to Wednesday’s main quake activity.

A 9.2 earthquake struck the south-central part of Alaska in 1964, making it the most powerful quake to hit North America in recorded history.
