New Mexico man dies of plague - New York Daily News

The fatality was a Rio Arriba County man in his 20s who died of septicemic plague, the New Mexico Department of Health announced Friday.

It was the first human plague death in the state this year and the second case overall, the health department said.

But it can also be transmitted by direct contact with infected animals, including rodents, wildlife and pets, the health department said.

The last human plague death occurred in 2015, and there was a nonfatal case in 2019, and none in 2018, the department said
