Soapbox: A Strange Desire For Switch Sports And A Return To Wii's Wuhu Island - Nintendo Life
Aug 02, 2021 8 mins, 20 secs
The Digital Foundry report on the game highlighted that, unlike the Super Mario 3D All-Stars compilation's version of Super Mario Galaxy, the SS re-release seems to utilise the original Wii code in clever ways.

Ultimately we have a version of the game that has beautifully clean visuals and a silky 60fps performance.

Maybe it's a result of writing this in the middle of a rather warm Scottish summertime, but I'd love a shiny version of Wii Sports Resort.

I've been very much enjoying the motion controls in Skyward Sword HD, remembering that there's child-like fun to the game mimicking my questionable swordplay.

Which brings us to Wii Sports Resort.

Arguably, if Nintendo was going to do the unlikely and revive Mii-based sports we'd probably get another iteration of the standard Wii Sports, like the poor-old underappreciated Wii Sports Club on Wii U.

Yet I much preferred Resort back in the day, which had the classics of Bowling and Golf along with some fun variety and the awesome Wuhu Island, which I recall Shigeru Miyamoto describing as more a character than a location.

My favourite events were those that took us around the island - Air Sports was a precursor to Pilotwings Resort, with varied neat ways to fly around.

Canoeing didn't feel the most natural to me but was a pleasure, and though the Cycling had motions that arguably had little relation to the real thing - tricky to recreate with a Remote - the act of racing in a sort of Tour de Wuhu Island was possibly my favourite part of the whole game.

A dreamy island and sports to suit any mood, fun both solo and especially with others in multiplayer.

Perhaps familiarity with motion controls meant that Resort didn't have the cultural impact of the original Wii Sports - though its sales were still very impressive - but it definitely won me over.

Above are all the sports via SuperMarioBlitz, probably emulated in HD which gives an impression of how it could turn out on Switch?

Nintendo briefly took us back to Wuhu Island in the aforementioned Pilotwings Resort on 3DS, a famously glitched course in Mario Kart 7 (which was then patched) and also in a rather cool Smash Bros!

Something like this, is long overdue for the switch and IMO, if it was incorporated into Animal Crossing (ie a DLC island to visit), that could make an interesting revival?.

I still see my kids playing this game a couple times a week.

Truly odd that Nintendo didn't make a new version of wii sports for the Switch gen.

I enjoyed Wii sports the original and resort's sword fighting.

I had always hoped Wii sports would be Nintendo's reintroduction to sports developed games.

I think Nintendo could create a great sports game to throw EA for a loop.

I’ve been saying this for years now, absolutely loved Wuhu Island and the Switch has so many gimmicks with zero use.

Wii Sports Resort is one of the best games of all time so I'd love to revisit Wuhu Island on Switch.

I don't want yet another port from Nintendo though; how about a brand new instalment that also brings back most or all of the sports from Resort.

I was talking to a non-Nintendo-worshipping friend the other day (I was shocked they existed too!) who was saying the Switch was missing out by not selling itself as a family device like the Wii was!

Glad to see I'm not the only one wanting to play some Wii resort.

Or maybe Nintendo thought 1- 2 Switch would scratch the Wii Sports itch.

I think the failure of the Wii U and Wii Sports Club probably fated any idea of expanding to Sports Resort to doom.

My offspring especially loved the Swordplay game.

I don't recall liking Wii Sports club and I don't remember why.

I play the crap out of Wii Sports Resort with my kids, they love skydiving.

Would love to see an HD Port/compilation of Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort.

Wii Sports Resort was outstanding software and it's one of the few physicals I still own for the Wii mode on my WiiU.

It was one of a handful of games that used the wiimotionplus which made the table tennis game mind bogglingly good at times to play.

The spin shots you could get in that game.

I miss Wuhu Island in Wii Sports resort and Wii Fit U.

Nintendo really did a good job with the different sports and made them fun to play.

Me and my kids still play Wii games on WiiU.

Mii Resort Paradise would be the ultimate game for anyone who wants a grand return to the Wii Sports Resort days, with a lot more to do as well.

Switch Sports would only ruin the sales of games like Mario Golf and Mario&Sonic at the Olympic Games.

Coming from someone who’s only first played the game recently and has no nostalgia for it, OH MY GOD WII SPORTS RESORT IS SO GOOD.

Pilotwings Resort was an underrated gem, definitely would love an HD sequel on Wuhu Island.

It had 2 quality Zelda releases, 2 Metroids, 2 absolutely stinking Mario platformers, some very clever mid-life games like Kirby’s Epic Yarn and frickin’ Sin and Punishment 2 (a sequel nobody expected!) and it’s latter years gave us fruit like Xenoblade and the highly underrated The Last Story.

Wii Sports Resort was an ingenious title.

The OG Wii Sports cleverly compensated for the original remotes lack of precision with programming tricks but there was no hiding with the W+.

I can only imagine people who hate on Wii Sports Resort were just crap at it.

I became addicted to the original Wii Sports Golf, it was so good.

Wii Sports Resort was AWESOME.

Just play Go Vacation on Switch - Miis are there , tropical island is there , there is much to do , just Wuhu is not there ...

I would rather play new games.

I would get a Switch version of this in a heartbeat, especially if it includes a pair of JoyCon (with RemotePlus attachments).

@mjharper : The Joy-Con don't need "MotionPlus" capability as that is already built-in, so to speak (as evidenced by games like ARMS, Skyward Sword HD, Super Mario Party etc.).

I only wish for a brand new Fishing Resort game in hd from the wii on the switch, it was such a fun game I put so many hours into it.

Oh yes, this and Wii play and Wii U sports club please.

The switch could honestly use a popular sports game that runs well and isn’t loaded with micro transactions.

I’d love a port of wii sports resort.

Then once that information is provided to you, it's up to you to decide if you want to get that new version or go up in your loft to get your original copy.

Man, it would be awesome if we could get a wii sports pack with all the wii sports games ever made ( or at least the good ones ) for the switch.

Never played Wii Sports Resort but it's one of those games I'm on the lookout for.

I also need to get the physical version of Wii Sports Club on the Wii U?

They could probably just reskin and update they original game

A lot of games I highly enjoyed like nothing else back then

It is extremely baffling to me why Nintendo hasn't either released a "remaster" of Wii Sports, or has at the very least developed a new standalone entry in the series (which I would dub "Switch Sports")

But leaving "Switch Sports" aside for a moment and getting back to the article: I never actually played Wii Sports Resort, but it always looked pretty fun to me

I did thoroughly enjoy the original Wii Sports, tho - and I would be totally okay with buying a remaster of either one of those games on Switch

Even still, I think I'd prefer to get a "from the ground up" "Switch Sports" title

They could take the sports that worked really well / were really popular from their Wii Sports entries and leave them largely intact - just add some new features (like online play for Tennis and Bowling, and more locations to play in, etc), and really overhaul the games that sucked (like Wii Sports Baseball), while adding some new ones

Like half the time, if they're not actively ignoring consumer demands (like with rebuffing the substantial number of customers who just want to have Earthbound on their Switch), they're creating supply where there is no demand (like trying to sell an online subscription service by providing a painfully slow trickle of SNES games that no one has ever heard of nor wanted)

Having it on Switch in HD, with interchangeable controls like Skyward Sword would be a blast

❗Maybe they could include Wuhu Island in the Switch version of 'Miitopia' as DLC

Loved Wii sports resort and even Wii fit would be nice to have back

Wii Music (gasp!) — I loved it, and we laughed our asses of at how hilariously (and sometimes intentionally) bad we were at the game, while most being competent musicians

@ThomasBW84 On your point of no sensor bar on the Switch, it won't be a problem at all for Sports Resort, because it is only needed for the onscreen cursor

I'd like a new Wii Sports or similar, no doubt

Even now, I barely game unless I’ve got someone else wanting to play

So I adore games like Wii Sports and its siblings

I would love Resort (which I have not played) on Switch to play with my five-year-old daughter - at the moment our favourite game is Overcooked (All You Can Eat, with the assist mode)

The WiiU had some online games to like tennis too
