Study: 5.4 Million Americans Lost Their Health Insurance Due Coronavirus
Jul 14, 2020 54 secs
An estimated 5.4 million Americans have lost their health insurance between February and May after being laid off due to the coronavirus pandemic, a recent study found.

The number of newly uninsured in that three-month span dwarfs all prior annual records for workers losing their health coverage.

The number of people who lost their health insurance in that three-month span is greater than the loss of coverage in any single year.

The record number of newly uninsured Americans is certain to become a major political issue in the November presidential election, as the fate of President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act continues to hang in the balance.

In April, the Trump administration decided against reopening the Obamacare exchanges for a special enrollment period that would have made it easier for recently laid off workers to get coverage on the exchanges after losing their employer-based health insurance.

Biden criticized the action, accusing Trump of trying “to strip health coverage away from tens of millions of families, and to strip the peace of mind away from more than 100 million people with preexisting conditions.”.
