Nationals Senator Matt Canavan has declared he will cross the floor to vote against any Government attempts to legislate a net zero target by 2050.

While speaking to reporters, Senator Canavan disputed claims that the Nationals had been shown any Government modelling on the impact of a net zero target, saying there had instead only been a few graphs with no clear underlying assumptions.

But he admitted it would not shift his opposition to net zero, which is based on his view that a net zero target is unnecessary and will damage Australia’s economy.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says her state’s road map, which will allow fully vaccinated people to enter from coronavirus hotspots shortly before Christmas without the need to quarantine, is “an incentive to get vaccinated”.

Resources Minister Keith Pitt says the Nationals have not moved on net zero emissions, despite Prime Minister Scott Morrison vowing to push on with a 2050 target regardless.

“It’s a no as the Deputy Prime Minister has said, but those discussions are ongoing,” Mr Pitt told the ABC’s RN Breakfast?

Asked whether he believes in climate change, Mr Pitt said: “The climate is changing.

Mr Pitt said the Nationals had not had enough time to consider Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s plan to reach net zero emissions by 2050.

Asked repeatedly whether he was still holding out for a $250 billion fund to support fossil fuel and resources projects with loans as a price for his support of net zero, Mr Pitt declined to explicitly support his own idea.

Meanwhile, Mr Pitt said former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull is entitled to his view that several key Nationals MPs are “hopeless, helpless climate laggards”, but said Mr Turnbull failed to deliver on his climate beliefs while leading the country.

Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce has defended the way his party is dragging out talks on climate change targets, but has acknowledged the numbers are with Prime Minister Scott Morrison on the plan to commit to net zero emissions by 2050.

The Deputy PM said Morrison had his own mandate to pursue the change.

The Deputy Prime Minister was speaking to reporters in the Mural Hall of Parliament House earlier this morning, ahead of a Coalition party room meeting where Liberals will try to get an outcome even though a small group of Nationals want to block the net zero commitment.

While the issue could take several more days to be finalised, the target has majority support in federal cabinet and in the Coalition party room.

Joyce made his remarks after Morrison told Parliament and the Liberal party room on Monday that the net zero target was a decision for cabinet – a key signal it does not need a vote in Parliament and does not need a consensus in the Nationals party room.

While Joyce argued Nationals MPs were right to stand up for their communities, he admitted Morrison had to make the call as Prime Minister.

Once Queensland reaches 70 per cent double-dose – expected by November 19 – people from hotspot locations can travel to Queensland by air only, provided they are fully vaccinated and have a negative COVID test in the previous 72 hours

Once the state hits 80 per cent – expected by December 17 – fully vaccinated people will be able to enter by road or air provided they have a negative COVID test 72 hours before arriving
