The Christ Church and neighbouring Milton Hall in Frederick Street in Launceston are being sold by the City Baptist Church as they look to make their services more accessible to the people they serve.

It has been a Baptist church since 1983, hosting a variety of groups including a Korean service and two services in Nepali for Bhutanese communities, along with a variety of arts events and sometimes shelter for those sleeping rough.

City Baptist Church pastor Jeff McKinnon said it was with some sadness the buildings were being sold, but that they were no longer fit for the work the church was doing.

Mr McKinnon said the church worked extensively with the homeless, migrants from culturally diverse backgrounds and other vulnerable people, some of whom would feel more comfortable seeking support from a less intimidating place.

"There's always grief in change and we have beautiful buildings, but the fact is they're not fit for purpose in terms of the ministry we want to do, the people we want to attract, the people we want to serve," she said.

Yousef Mohammadi said the men's group information sessions, which cover everything from how to do the census survey to teaching English, have been particularly welcoming for people in his community, who are Muslim.

"Most people from my community, they're very surprised with the warm support and welcome from people from other cultures, from other religions," he said.

Reverend John West was the first pastor of Christ Church, which was run out of Milton Hall until the church was built.

"The Tasmanian Heritage Council are very amenable and understanding that buildings need a future so certainly redevelopment needs to be sensitive, but we've all seen those church conversions on Grand Designs, so it can be done," Mr Shepherd said

Mr McKinnon said the sale is a good thing for the broader Launceston community
