A West Australian great grandmother spent 17 days in hospital and now suffers debilitating symptoms after having a rare reaction to the AstraZeneca vaccine.

She was diagnosed with a rare bleeding disorder called immune thrombocytopenia, which her doctor attributed to the vaccine.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration estimates one person in every 100,000 AstraZeneca doses may contract the rare bleeding disorder.

Earlier in July, the Therapeutic Goods Administration said a 61-year-old Perth woman death after developing a rare bleeding disorder was likely linked to the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Of more than 5.4 million AstraZeneca doses administered across the country there have only been 31 suspected cases of ITP.

The benefit of vaccination in preventing COVID-19 via the AstraZeneca vaccination outweighs the risk of someone developing thrombocytopenia syndrome, which is why it continues to be given to Australians older than 60

Advice released on July 15 said the total Australian reports assessed as being TTS following the AstraZeneca vaccine was 51 confirmed cases and 32 probable cases, with a total of 83 cases overall from about 5.4 million doses
