Two people fully vaccinated against COVID-19 in Clark County have died after contracting rare breakthrough cases of the disease, local health officials report.

Additionally, 29 immunized people have been hospitalized, according to a Southern Nevada Health District report published Thursday.

Altogether, the county has identified 186 breakthrough cases, only about 0.03 percent of the more than 630,000 residents who have been fully vaccinated.

Nevada and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention define a breakthrough case as a person testing positive for COVID-19 two or more weeks after a final vaccine dose.

The Review-Journal asked the health district for specifics about age, underlying conditions and vaccines administered for the breakthrough case patients who died and were hospitalized, but the agency had not yet provided the information as of Thursday afternoon.

Of the 186 breakthrough cases, the health district had linked only two to COVID-19 variants.

Due to ongoing high levels of COVID-19 circulation, the health district reports that “thousands of symptomatic vaccine breakthrough cases are expected, even if the vaccines remain as effective as demonstrated during the clinical trials.”.
