State health officials reported 76 new COVID-19 outbreaks linked to schools last week, resulting in the infection of at least 428 students and staff.

25, included a nearly 25% decrease in new outbreaks and about a 50% decline in affected individuals.

Last week there were 101 new outbreaks with 858 infected residents.

Michigan’s Department of Health and Human Services continues to monitor 421 ongoing outbreaks from prior weekly reports, which have infected at least 4,758 students and staff.

Those outbreaks have affected at least 5,186 students and staff.

Schools continue to be the most common setting for reported COVID-19 outbreaks, and individuals 5 to 18 years old represent the largest increase in cases since Sept.

Among the 76 new school outbreaks, nine involved 10 or more students and staff.

While K-12 schools make up the majority of outbreaks, college outbreaks are typically responsible for the majority of individuals affected by the outbreak.

The University of Michigan has the largest ongoing outbreak, with 236 affected students and staff.

Outbreak data for K-12 schools includes only cases in which the student or staff was infected at school or at a school-related function.
