For the third season in a row now, Haunted, Plunder and now another one so mysterious it still doesn’t have a name a day ahead of launch, Bungie has decided to share effectively zero information ahead of launch outside of broader changes like sandbox tweaks and gear nerfs and buffs.

It's…deeply perplexing both as an avid Destiny player, where I and the other dedicated parts of the community are looking for a reason to get hyped for the next season, and from an outside perspective, where non-die hard players probably would have absolutely zero idea a new Destiny season launches tomorrow?

Story Secrets – The idea is that Bungie wants to spring story elements on us as a “fun surprise” when the season launches and anything ahead of that would be “spoiling it.” I could have bought this explanation for when they brought back the Leviathan for Season of the Haunted, but there was little reason to keep the pirate-themed Season of Plunder under wraps, and I don’t know what they could be hiding next season that would be worth this cone of silence?

But I would argue this is a massive overcorrection, as “maybe don’t put the secret puzzle quest reward in the roadmap” does not really translate into “say literally nothing about a season until the hour it launches.” It’s pretty clear community sentiment is not behind this decision, and it seems like an odd move when the game’s morale and playercount have never been lower.

The idea here is that Lightfall, and pre-orders for the full year’s package which includes all next year’s season, is really the only thing Bungie actively cares about selling, and many fans have already pre-purchased existing seasons through the deluxe edition of The Witch Queen last year.

Other games, TV shows and movies don’t launch out of the blue sky with zero promotion ahead of time outside of exceptionally rare occasions.
