The map of the galaxy found that the Earth is 2000 light-years closer to the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy than previously believed.
In 1985, the International Astronomical Union announced that Earth was 27,700 light-years from the black hole in the galaxy’s center, named Sagittarius A*.
Positioning indicates the Earth orbits the Galactic Center, where the black hole resides, at 227 km/s.
