Ghost of Tsushima released for PlayStation 4 on the 17th July 2020, meaning that it's one year old today?

Developer Sucker Punch also did a great job of supporting the game once it was on the market, providing notable free updates, like a New Game+ mode, and an entire co-op component called Ghost of Tsushima Legends.

Looking back at our Ghost of Tsushima PS4 review, we still agree with the assessment.

Ghost of Tsushima remains one of our absolute favourite open world titles of the last generation, and, of course, it plays even better on PS5.

It's still an absolutely gorgeous game, completed by a supremely satisfying combat system — and it's probably about to get even better with the upcoming Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut.

But how do you feel about Ghost of Tsushima, now that it's a year old.

A solid 9/10, if I was to play it now I'd think its a next gen game compared to the actual next gen games out now.

Outside of presentation I don't think this game does anything very special, it is however fun to play through and the extras while bordering on busy work are probably just the right side of the line to keep them from being annoying.

My only real issue I can come up with is the AI is a bit too easy to manipulate but the Wind mechanic is legit the best idea I've seen for the open world genre since it's inception really.

I haven't played an open world game since but I really feel like it's going to be weird playing open world games without something like it.

The exploration of environment for powerups was great!

The game that has ruined combat for me in all other open world games.

Its not that i dont think the game deserves it (heck, it deserves it for the amount of time i spent in photo mode alone), and the presentation is excellent - to the point i even bought the art book?

But these are very small points in what is one of my favourite games ever made.

Honestly, the game has spoiled other open worlds for me in a way.

Who needs all that ui nonsense, when this had the guiding wind mechanic which was one of the best innovations ive seen in the open world space in a long time.

I only finished it a couple of weeks ago but it's a cracker of a game.

I mean, I’ve never played it but there’s no way any game that gets that many rave reviews can realistically be a 1.

Loved the story, great game mechanics and stunning visuals with the PS5 patch.

It’s a good game but quite overrated in my opinion.

Added to the list of open-world games I never finished because I got bored.

No it hasn't I still think it's the best game of last gen and it's definitely my all time favourite game in fact I'm playing it right now.

I don't think it's a perfect game and it does have some issues but my overall enjoyment playing this game has overshadowed some of its flaws?

It's one of the most satisfying AAA game that I've played.

I gave it a 7, I felt like Sucker Punch stick to the same formula when it comes to missions and sub missions and there wasn’t a great amount of variety when attempting to complete everything.

The gameplay melds perfectly with the themes of the story - another rarity in the craft of video games.

The wind mechanic is an elegant solution to some pervasive problems in most open-world games (over-reliance on mini-maps, etc.). The art style and graphics are beautiful. Side quests actually felt more like side stories with their own story beats.

What an achievement! Ghost of Tsushima pushes the medium forward. Games like this are why people love PlayStation.

For the regular game as an isolated experience, I'd still give it an 8. However, after all the new things they've added like new game plus and the really good Legends mode, the overall package is easily a 9 in my book.

@KippDynamite well said! This is exactly the stuff that elevated this game for me as well. It engaged me in a huge variety of very deep themes without ever being preachy, pretentious or offensively on the nose. The package as a whole consistently put me in such a contemplative yet rejuvenating head space. I truly loved being in this terrible yet beautiful world.

8/10 from me, great game, I just didn't personally find the story all that great for me hence the 8. Gameplay was 10/10 though.

Oh it's easily a 9 for me.

Ghost of Tsushima offers interesting insight into the state of game publications today. When it released, it received an 83 on metacritic from critics. While not a bad score by any means, it was weighed down by publications that gave it mediocre and poor reviews for being on "outdated open world game" and "failing to innovate." At the same time, user reviews on metacritic gave it a 9.2, simply because the game was well made and was fun. By contrast, critics gave Last of Us 2 a 93 on metacritic, while users gave it a 5.7. This was a game that publications felt compelled to say "innovated" in certain areas and they rewarded that. But game reviews shouldn't hinge solely on whether a game innovates, but rather is it good. Innovation is great if it makes games better, but it can just as easily make games worse. When a developer takes risks and the risks don't pay off, they shouldn't be rewarded for taking them. Innovation is a gamble and it should remain that way. If not, we will inventivize the production of games that are poorly made and not fun, simply because they do something differently. Thankfully Push Square didn't fall into this trap. I think they gave Ghost the review it deserved.

Not played it yet. Solid 8/10 masterpiece.

A game that was just ok imo 6/10.

Still haven't played it and don't really feel like it. I'm burnt out on open world games and this looks like your typical run-of-the-mill open world game. I'll eventually try it, but still waiting for it to hit the bargain bin.

@Ear_wiG That’s definitely the fault of the game design... never played GoT but many open world games share that problem.

Assassin’s Creed 2 was the best game I ever played for about four hours... then the difficulty curve went off a cliff. I don’t need to engage with any of the games mechanics, I don’t need to sneak around unless forced to by a mission because combat is trivial... I don’t even need a weapon because I can take the enemies‘. It went from a completely immersive world to 1) rotate camera towards objective marker, 2) press forward, 3) hold X.

I don’t play a lot of open world games, but for example Xenoblade Chronicles X and Subnautica do not have that problem. Their are layers of challenge that are spread throughout the experience. You never become overpowered for very long, you’re just able to meet the next layer of challenge.

@gollumb82 Same. I was on a feudal Japan kick after playing Sekiro and Nioh 2, but I’m too skeptical about a go to the icon-fest open world for more than 20 bucks or a PSNow sub. It’s very tempting though!

Love this game..my oppinion of it is the same as when it launched..awesome..the only game i have played recently that changed my mind about it was horizon zero dawn..initially i didnt like it but i tried it again and found it to be a damn good game and possibly even better looking at times than ghost..

My biggest complaint with the game came down to how unoriginal it was given it was another Assassin Creed like open world game .

9/10 for me, which is incredible, especially considering the fact that I generally don't much care for Samurai or Ninja genres of games. So the fact that Sucker Punch were able to create a samurai game that I not only liked, but loved, is an incredible feat and a true testament to Sucker Punch as a Developer.

Plus I think it's awesome how Ghost of Tsushima was able to have such a positive impact on the real-life island of Tsushima, always great whenever a video game is able to make a positive real-life impact on the world, especially during difficult times as these.

Really wish PlayStation / Sucker Punch had made a 1-hour long Documentary of the Making of Ghost of Tsushima, like with God of War, Last of Us, Horizon Zero Dawn, Demon Souls Remake etc. Really would love to see and understand the thought process and the trials and tribulations that went into the creation of this excellent game.

A solid 8, a good game but it is very repetitive. After nearly finishing Days Gone the two games have a lot in common. They're almost the same game in lots of ways. It's interesting how one got dismissed and the other lauded.

I only played Ghost for the first time a few months ago. I think it's a very good Ubisoft map game that's elevated by its commitment to its setting. However, I also kind of think in a lot of ways it's one of Sucker Punch's least interesting games. I think the companion quests are easily the best part of the game, but the main storyline has a lot of issues for me in terms of narrative leaps.

I'd give it an 8. It's a great game, just likely one I'll never revisit, unless I finally give Legends a go. I can't really even imagine myself playing the DLC island unless there are some significant gameplay and progression additions.

Its more than the sum of its parts and I think I appreciate that point more in hindsight. It offers a stunning, ethereal world... one I've never visited before. I just want slightly deeper world building next time, a living breathing world. With more characterful side missions.

7/10 good main story stylish but bog standard ubisoft open world design clear icons off a map

9 and anything else from anyone just shows me they know jack sh*t about videogames. Sorry, not sorry x)

7 for me, combat is fun, stealth is a bit rubbish and it suffers from the usual open world nonsense and it's completely unbalanced, making it very easy towards the end

Was great but to me was never something out of the extraordinary

I played Spider-Man and Horizon: Zero Dawn twice each, got the Platinums, and played through the DLC

It's good, but Sony's other titles rise above it by a good amount

However, there was also a large contingent of people that felt the game was just boring and not well made, and that Naughty Dog thought that those other elements of the story would carry the game, when they did not

Saying that however this was the first open world stealth action adventure game I ever played and honestly I can see some people’s frustrations

What's truly insane is that The Last of Us II released in June 2020, followed by Ghost, then all the PS5 launch window games (Sackboy, Demon's Souls, Miles Morales, Astrobot, Destruction All-stars, Returnal, Ratchet & Clank)...and Xbox hasn't released anything

6, in a over saturated open world market, other than the setting it was incredibly formulaic once you strip it down

It's a beautiful looking game with excellent sound and enjoyed the story
