Sarasota County more than doubled its previous record for new cases, while Manatee also set a new record.

The Florida Department of Health announced 11,458 new cases of COVID-19 in the state on Saturday, July 4, beating the previous highest number of new cases in a single day — set on Thursday — by almost 1,500,.

Sarasota County’s numbers jumped by 245 cases since Friday — ,more than double the previous record of 119 — to 2,059 cases, the fourth day in a row that new cases have been over 100.

Manatee County also set a new record of 293 new cases, beating the previous record of 274 set at the end of June, for a total of 3,554.

Sarasota County’s positivity test rate Saturday was 13% percent, while Manatee County’s rate was 12%.

The number of COVID-19 patients at Sarasota Memorial Hospital keeps climbing to new records.

The hospital had a record 61 COVID-19 patients Friday, up from 56 patients on Thursday and 50 on Tuesday.
