Spider-Man PS5 vs PS4 Comparison Shows Off a Generational Leap - Push Square

Of course, the difference isn't quite as impressive as that particular comparison, but Marvel's Spider-Man: Remastered still has a few tricks up its sleeve that put a PS4 game to shame.

I'm just really happy this game is finally running at 60fps.

A game with such fluid exploration and combat mechanics demands that kind of performance.

Honestly the HDR kinda works against the presentation somewhat given I already thought Spidey's Advanced suit had this really glaring orange tint in the PS4 game during day time segments in New York and now it looks even more accentuated here.

Because any PS5 game that plays on PS4 looks like a PS4 game.

Not say they look bad, but theirs a clear difference between them and games like Demon Souls and Ratchet and Clank that are built just for PS5.

I'd say basically everyone who played this on PS4 is safe to skip the remaster, unless you're super into vaguely better looking versions of 2 year old games?

The better framerate is a plus, though, but not 70 USD worthy whatsoever.

Better textures, better resolution sure ...

I hope they will learn their lesson after this one and don't do this again with other games like GoT LoU2 and Uncharted.

They could easily reward people who are already within their eco system with free upgrades.

@Juanalf not 60fps tho or native 4k or raytracing.

If you told me the PS5 demo was just the PS4 game I would believe you, it changes barely anything.

I am really looking forward to some potential future Digital Foundry comparison between PS4 Pro original, vs PS5 BC Boost Mode, vs Remaster with Ray Tracing vs 60fps version.

Happy to pay $20 for whichever is the better version.

@TheFrenchiestFry correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t the combat in this game similar to Arkham games or Assassins Creed where it’s kind of like ‘combat simplified’ or ‘dial a combo’.

I wouldn’t have thought the extra frames would make a difference in a game like this.

For stuff like Platinum Games action titles or FROMSOFT games it would make far more of a difference having 60fps.

When I booted up Nioh 2 for the first time though, I had to fiddle around with it multiple times because it made the entire game look weird and washed out, and visibility was really low.

@Arnna Spider-Man 2 (The movie game) was technically the first to incorporate this kind of combat system with counter being mapped to a button and chaining attacks with counters and the like with the whole Spider-Sense system.

It's doesn't explicitly scream Platinum games to me, like I still think Bayonetta and DMC feel different enough, but it's safe to say if you've played Arkham or the Activision era Spider-Man games like Web of Shadows or Ultimate Spider-Man, you'd be perfectly accustomed to it.

I personally have no problem doing this kind of stuff at 30fps since it doesn't require a large amount of precision to start chaining attacks and combining them with web tricks, but the 60fps is definitely going to be a lot more substantial of an upgrade than literally anything else in this ""remaster"" in my opinion.

It looks better.

Most fast paced games would benefit from better frame rates.

PS5 has better colors and lighting, but everything else looks worse.

Ghosts had a free updated I think.

On YouTube though I have seen HDR videos from Digital Foundry and others for Spiderman and, on my screen, they look sooo much nicer.

Digital Foundary is gonna be watched by people who love high end graphical stuff.

Other than the reflections in the building, and a few small textures in the background, I couldn't tell the difference between the PS4 and PS5 versions (and sometimes I thought the PS4 version looked better).

If you stop and look at the textures on small objects in the background (a soda can, a garbage bag, etc...) you can see the detail level is much better on the PS5 version (and the reflections on the buildings), but everything else looks pretty much the same (just a little brighter).

The faces look bad on the PS5.

For free.

But this would be like me replaying old games in my Steam library because I can now select Ultra and RayTacing with a new RTX3080.

Seems like there are lots of visual cutbacks for the improved frame rate in performance mode!

@Paranoimia I'm pretty sure those raytraced reflections in Windows are in quality mode, not performance.

Yeah I mean I'm sure it's better but not worth paying for the upgrade.

Microsoft is upgrading their games pretty much the same as this (Forza is also going from 1080p30 on the One to 4K60 on Series X) and it's a free update..

It just looks like someone turned up the brightness setting.

HDR is relative, as it will tend to look different per TV and per individual settings the owner has made.

They could just unlock the frame rate in the original for a free upgrade and call it a day?

Also, I understood that performance mode lacks ray-tracing, does that mean that it's either ray-tracing or 60fps.

there is a new character model which most people dislike.

there is a 60fps upgrade which is par for the course next gen (bare min upgrade).

some of the shadows actually look WORSE in the enchanced edition (lots of shimmering).

the upgrade should be free for all ps4 owners.

It's free update territory?

Especially if it's ray tracing or 60fps, and not both.

They're not even making the "quality" mode 60fps...

This is a remaster rather than a remake from the ground up, so it is essentially going to look like the same game.

The original games (especially 2 and 3) looked great and were fine to play on ps3, but the resolution bump, graphical enhancements and smooth 60 fps in the Bluepoint versions really made a difference to the experience.

He actually looks a lot like Kieran Tierney from Arsenal.

I'm not normally one to piss and moan but this is so ridiculous, Iv never played this and don't intend to, granted the reflections and stuff look pretty cool but the games 2 years old and looks great anyway just give people with the game the free upgrade to frames and Res and be done with it, instead of trying to milk the fan base with something a little more shiny, to be honest it's a joke, @SilkySmile89 you'd like to think so buddy, but ultimately money talks and if enough people buy the remaster it's only going to give them the insentive to do it again and again, the only way to get companies to stop with their bull**** is to hit them in the pocket, if this goes down well enough for them and the profits nice I wouldn't be surprised to see all their exclusives from the last few years get this same treatment instead of the free upgrade path, here's to hoping people respond with their wallets tho and let Sony know this isn't what we want !!.

And the fact they have locked this behind the ps5 miles Morales ultimate edition to get people to pay £70 for the privilege is beyond filth.

Yes, it's like people dont know the difference between a remaster and a remake?

Very few games dlc components have made the game better.

@JapaneseSonic yeah I understand that mate, that's why it's even more irritating, if they want to go down that route why not make it a stand alone upgrade that people can pay for through the old game if they wish to, instead of locking it behind the ultimate edition of miles, this doesn't even effect me so I don't know why its bothering me but it stinks?

Yes yes, its £20, it should be free yadi, yada.

I wouldn't replay it even if it was free.

I'd rather people complain about all the prices going up unfairly in the UK for sofware AND hardware on PlayStation AND xbox.

This game is now less than £20 on the ps4 and they expect people to pay £60 for these small graphical tweaks?

Played through the first game, look forward to doing it again.

So we know this remaster will be having options like performance mode for 60fps and resolution for 4K but where does the ray-tracing fit

I was honestly expecting games that aren’t cross gen and only on PS5 and Series X to have it all, 4K 60fps with ray-tracing and no compromises

We’ve had games in 4K 60fps on X1X and PS4 Pro but the PS5 and Series X aren’t able add ray-tracing to both 4K and 60fps without making the game 1440p or 30fps

Its interesting though that over double the "power" brings such small upgrades with it, certainly poo poos the difference between the two big boy consoles being a significant deal

60fps will be very nice, but you then lose a lot of the visual bells and whistles

Except for running in performance mode, with less shadows, and a different tone of colors, it barely looks any different

And the lighting in the cutscene, looks better in the original

It just looks like they changed things for no reason

60 fps mode is nice, but other than that, this "remaster" is just a cheap way to make us pay for the game again

Really not sure why they led with Performance Mode for a video

You’ll only feel the improvements made by 60fps when playing

Erm...isn’t the fact it’s running in performance mode the clue that it isn’t going to look much different

Yes, I’m sure it’s far more realistic and properly accounts for the space and light sources etc, but the pre rendered shadows of the original just look far more dramatic

Ray tracing is in the non performance mode as standard

Seems to me that people just like moaning for the sake of it..

I am not sure what people were expecting from this new generation

Give the gen a year or two and we will see a lot of difference (like on PS4)

And in a generation where other games are getting more improvements for free, if you're going to charge for a remaster, you're going to have to put in more effort

¯\(ツ)/¯ it does look better, but not 'wow' better

The biggest leap is to 60fps, but I would hope the PS5 runs the PS4 version of Spiderman at a near locked 60fps anyway

@Chimhog the difference is you don't have to buy it twice

You can see pores and face contours better

Even if new one is younger don't young people have pores too

@theMEGAniggle Uhhhhhhh except it is 60fps

Honestly not that big of a difference, except to the biggest of graphics snobs

but most remastered games are just cash grab

@CosmicGypsy369 I hope most people would buy the normal edition of SM - MM cause they already played through the first game on PS4, as did I
