The American Meteor Society said it received 148 fireball reports from Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, West Virginia and Virginia.

The largest group of eyewitness accounts, more than 80, came from North Carolina, where the fireball, or bright meteor, skimmed the coast, becoming visible 48 miles above the ocean off Camp Lejeune, according to NASA.

It soared northeast at 32,000 mph, climbing 26 miles through Earth’s upper atmosphere before disintegrating 28 miles over Morehead City, the agency said.
