'Rosetta stone' explosion on the sun reveals clues about solar eruptions, study reports - USA TODAY

A dramatic explosion on the sun is revealing new clues about what causes these powerful and unpredictable eruptions, a new study released this week said.

The eruption ultimately grew into a substantial coronal mass ejection, or CME, a giant cloud of solar material.

A dramatic explosion on the sun is revealing new clues about what causes these powerful and unpredictable eruptions, a new study released this week said. .

The explosion, which occurred in March 2016, contained elements of three different types of solar eruptions that usually occur separately – making it the first time such an event has been reported, NASA said in a statement.

“This event is a 'missing link,' where we can see all of these aspects of different types of eruptions in one neat little package,” said Emily Mason, lead author on the new study and solar scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.

According to NASA, eruptions on the sun usually come in one of three forms: a coronal mass ejection, a jet, or a partial eruption.
