I also ordered a spicy oat milk chai (from fellow Oakland business Flowerhead Tea) and an additional half-dozen bagels and a tub of scallion cream cheese to take home.

So I grabbed a barstool next to a vase of fresh flowers, the cheery space decorated with poppy paraphernalia inviting me to stay awhile.

My barstool neighbor, Berkeley resident Joel Kirschenbaum, told me Poppy serves his favorite bagel in the entire country.

When Poppy started consistently selling out early at the farmers market, Kashuk realized it was time to find a more permanent home.
