Many factors can cause vitamin D deficiency including insufficient exposure to sunlight and lack of vitamin D-rich foods in your diet

While everyone and anyone is prone to vitamin D deficiency, a recent study found that the condition can be very high in Kashmir, especially among women

It was found that vitamin D deficiency was very high in the valley, especially among women

The research paper revealed, “222 (82.2%) of the subjects studied had Vitamin D deficiency

45 of the 69 males and 177 of the 201 females were found to be Vitamin D deficient."

As per the study, the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency ranged from 58% in the farmers’ group to 93% in the employee group

“Further, vitamin D deficient subjects had a significantly lower mean weekly exposure to sunlight,” read the study

Iqbal Saleem, Professor of Surgery, Government Medical College, Srinagar, told The Kashmir Monitor that despite the high amount of sunlight available in the valley, the patients report mild to moderate deficiency of vitamin D

Dr Saleem further highlights that while vitamin D deficiency is less talked about, mild and moderate cases continue to occur

While sunlight is the best source of vitamin D, there are some food sources that do contain some amount of the nutrient, as per the UK National Health Services (NHS):

Another source of vitamin D is dietary supplements, says the health body

While most people do not need supplements and can get their share of vitamin D from the sunlight and foods alone, some people may need supplements in case they suffer from deficiency due to low exposure to sunlight or lack of vitamin D rich foods in the diet
