Perseid meteor shower peaks next week, but full moon could interfere - USA TODAY

What NASA calls the "the best meteor shower of the year" – the Perseids – will be coming to a sky near you next week, weather permitting.

“Most of us in North America would normally see 50 or 60 meteors per hour, but this year, during the normal peak, the full Moon will reduce that to 10-20 per hour at best.”.

The best Perseid performance in recorded history was in 1993, when the peak rate topped 300 meteors per hour, according to NASA.

The Perseid meteor shower occurs every year when the Earth passes through the cloud of debris left by the comet Swift-Tuttle.
