The Toronto Film Festival (September 10-19) has revealed the lineup for its hybrid 2020 edition, which has had to be pared back due to the impact of coronavirus.
Joining movies previously announced for the festival are new projects by the likes of Werner Herzog, Regina King, Francois Ozon and Naomi Kawase.
Movies previously announced for Sundance and Venice which are also heading to Toronto include Viggo Mortensen’s Falling, Olivia Colman-Anthony Hopkins starrer The Father, Kornél Mundruczó’s Pieces Of A Woman and Frederick Wiseman’s City Hall.
Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland will debut at Toronto and Venice simultaneously.
Like Venice earlier this week, Toronto has pulled together a healthy global offering in the context, even if it looks lighter than usual on likely U.S.
Large gatherings are still not permitted in Toronto, but from this Friday the city is due to reopen cinemas and resume indoor service in bars and restaurants.
Despite easing of the lockdown, the festival has said that few international press and industry are expected to attend the festival in person, with screenings and market business also taking place online.
“We began this year planning for a 45th Festival much like our previous editions,” said Cameron Bailey, Artistic Director and Co-Head of TIFF, “but along the way we had to rethink just about everything.
The festival added: “Films on offer will reflect first-rate international cinema, documentaries, and Canadian creativity.
