Britain has recorded more than 1000 new coronavirus infections in a day for the first time since late June.

The number of patients hospitalised with the virus continues to decline, as does the daily number of deaths.

The Health Ministry on Sunday recorded nearly 64,000 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours for a total of 2,153,010.

Italy's tally of daily new COVID-19 cases has leaped higher, with 463 cases, according to Health Ministry figures.

Many of the latest cases have been found in young people returning from vacations abroad.

Italy's day-to-day new caseload had previously soared far above 500 confirmed infections, but the number had dropped to 347 on Saturday, more in line with numbers of the past few weeks.

For months, the region with by far the most daily new coronavirus infections had been Lombardy, the northern region where Italy's outbreak erupted in February.

While in the first weeks of the outbreak in Italy, only one of every 83 infections occurred in persons 18 years old or younger, now one of every eight confirmed cases occurs in that age bracket.

Health officials believe the actual number is perhaps 10 times higher, or closer to 50 million, given testing limitations and the fact that as many as 40 per cent of all those who are infected have no symptoms.

Scientists say the UK may have reached the limit of how much it can relax lockdown restrictions without causing a new surge in coronavirus infections.

A sharp increase in the number of people presenting to Victoria's already strained emergency departments for self-harm or in acute mental distress has prompted an almost $60 million boost to the state's mental health services.

The number of people presenting to ED for self-harm across all age groups is up 9.5 per cent on the same time last year, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews revealed today.

The rise has been even sharper in young people aged under 18 – up 33 per cent.

Overall, there has been a 23.3 per cent increase in mental health patients attending Emergency departments compared to last year.

In western Sydney alone, 544 people were traced as contacts through the app and led to the positive identification of two new COVID-19 cases, Dr Coatsworth said.

NSW recorded 10 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, only one of which was a returned overseas traveller who has entered hotel quarantine.

NSW has recorded a string of similar numbers of coronavirus cases over the last week, however state authorities have warned against complacency after 11 new infections had no known source

More than 200 Victorians have died and thousands more have been infected with COVID-19, but it appears the public health messages are still not being heard by many in the state
