The cliches adults use to justify their alcohol consumption have been turned on their head, with a new video campaign from the Alcohol and Drug Foundation.

The foundation’s CEO, Dr Erin Lalor, says that after nearly two months of isolation and social distancing, Australian Bureau of Statistics data showed that 14 per cent of Australians consumed more alcohol during the period early-April to early-May than previously.

The alcohol industry has accused abstinence lobby groups of cherry picking their statistics.

The ABS data showed that while 14.4 per cent were drinking, 9.5 per cent were drinking less, presumably because of the closure of pubs, clubs and bars

“It is disappointing this campaign focuses on the negative when Australians have earned a pat on the back for overwhelmingly drinking in moderation during the coronavirus crisis,” Wilsmore said
