The car park closures follow warnings sounded this week over the potential for Canberra's second light rail stage to create massive commuter disruption, with Commonwealth Avenue flagged for an 80 per cent reduction in its traffic capacity.
A senior lecturer in transport management at the University of Sydney has previously told The Canberra Times the light rail project could be transformative for residents commuting habits.
"Building light rail to Woden will provide more convenient and reliable transport options for people on the southside, help prevent future traffic gridlock and cut transport emissions," an ACT government spokesperson said.
